McDonald’s Canada Reintroduces McVeggie Burger in Limited Test

Story Highlights
  • McDonald’s Canada tests McVeggie burge
  • Veggie patty includes carrots, peas, soybeans, and more.
  • Follows failed PLT plant-based burger attempt.
  • 35% of Canadians have dietary restrictions.
  • Success may lead to nationwide launch.

McDonald’s Canada is once again testing a plant-based burger, the McVeggie, in select locations across British Columbia, Ontario, and New Brunswick. This limited-time trial, running until April 14, aims to offer a flavorful vegetarian option for customers looking beyond traditional beef and chicken choices.

McVeggie: What’s Inside?

The McVeggie burger features a crispy, breaded patty made from carrots, green beans, zucchini, peas, soybeans, broccoli, and corn. It is served on a toasted sesame bun with shredded lettuce and sauce, with an option for a spicy habanero variant.

A Second Attempt at Plant-Based Success

This is not McDonald’s Canada’s first foray into plant-based burgers. In 2019, the company tested the PLT (Plant, Lettuce, Tomato) burger, which used a Beyond Meat patty. However, the trial ended due to low consumer demand. Unlike the PLT, which was designed to mimic meat, the McVeggie highlights visible chunks of vegetables, offering a fresh take on plant-based fast food.

Why Now?

McDonald’s research shows that 35% of Canadians have dietary restrictions or preferences that influence their food choices. With an increasing demand for vegetarian options, the company hopes the McVeggie will attract a wider audience.

What’s Next?

The McVeggie’s future will depend on customer feedback and sales performance. If the test run is successful, McDonald’s may consider expanding it nationwide.

For now, vegetarian fast-food lovers in select test cities can try the McVeggie until April 14 at participating McDonald’s locations. Will this plant-based burger finally win over Canadian consumers? Only time will tell.
